Ruth
(The Bible)

Publicidade
Ruth is another book in the collection of books known as the
Bible.  Ruth is a story of loyalty, love, and compassion.
The title character, Ruther, is a young lady who leaves her homeland
out of loyalty to her mother in law, and in turn, finds love.

The story begins with a famine in Israel, which drives a family, mother
father and two boys, to move to a nearby land.  In this land, the
two boys take wives from these people, not Jews.  Eventually
however, the husband and both sons die, leaving Naomi (the mother) in a
strange land with everyone who meant something to her dead.

She decides that she will return to Israel, the famine now long over,
and tells her two daughter in laws goodbye, not expecting them to
return with her and leave all of their people and country behind.
One of the girls, Orpah, agrees to come along, but soon, without much
asking, decides to stay in her own country.

The other girl, Ruth, is adamant, and refuses to stay in her
homeland.  She says that she loves Naomi, and will go with her and
take her people and land and God as her own.  Naomi begs Ruth to
stay, for her own good, but Ruth refuses.  Eventually Naomi and
Ruth make their way back to Israel where Naomi decides to change her
name to "bitter," having lost everything that she loves.

Naomi being old, Ruth decides to help out.  There is a practice in
the land known as gleaning, whereby poor women can get grain by
following along behind the reapers and getting what is dropped for
their own.  It is a fairly dangerous job, as many of the reapers
would take advantage of these poor helpless women, especially
foreigners.

However, Ruth is in luck.  The field that she went to glean in
just happened to belong to one of Naomi's kinfolk, and he takes pity on
her.  He tells the reapers to leave behind extra for her, and to
keep thier hands off of her.  Ruth comes home to Naomi with tons
of grain, and Naomi figures out what is going on.  Naomi tells
Ruth that this man may be able to marry her, and sends her off to see
if he will.  He agrees, and they marry, eventually having a child
that is in the direct line of David.
