Exodus
(The Bible)

Publicidade
Exodus, the second book in the collection of books known as the Bible,
tells the continuing story of Israel, specifically as they attempt to
exit the land of Egypt where they have been in slavery for years.

The book centers on a man named Moses, who is an Israelite.  Moses
was born in Egypt under the slavery.  By the time Moses was born,
however, the Israelites had become large in number, and the Pharaoh had
become worried about a revolt, so he ordered all of the Israelite males
that were born to be killed.  Moses' mother managed to hide him
when he was born, but soon he grew too large to be hidden.  Rather
than have her beloved child killed, Moses' mother put him in a little
basket and floated him down the river, hoping someone kind would find
him.  She sent her daughter to watch and see what happened.

Soon Pharaoh's daughter went to the river to bathe, and she found the
child, and decided to keep him.  Moses' sister ran after Pharaoh's
daughter and told her that she knew a Hebrew woman who would be glad to
nurse the child, and so Moses' mother got to raise him till he was old
enough to be weaned.

Moses grew up in the palace, but always knew he was a Hebrew.  One
day he saw one of his people being beaten by an Egyptian, and in a fit
of anger, killed the Egyption.  Because of this, he had to flee
into the desert to avoid the wrath of the Egyptians.

Moses started a new life in the desert, taking a wife and having
children.  One day, God came to Moses and told him that he was to
lead the people out of bondage.  Moses was sceptical, but through
a series of miracles, God convinced him to do it, and Moses began to
work on Pharaoh.

Of course Pharaoh did not want to lose his entire workforce, so he
refused to let the people go.  Through a series of ten horrible
plagues, however, he was convinced, and allowed the Israelites to
leave.  Soon after, he changed his mind and followed them.
The Israelites were blocked by the Red Sea, but God parted the Sea so
that they could walk across.  As soon as they were all across, the
sea came crashing down on the Egyptians, killing them.

The Israelites continued their journey in search of the promised land,
but complained a lot about their conditions.  Because of their
complaints, God made them wander in the desert for 40 years before they
could enter the land.
