The Art Of War
(Sun Tzu)
THE ART OF WAR AND THE ART OF POKER The list of quality books on poker written by respected authors and poker professionals seems to get longer almost daily. From Super System I and II, the offerings of Sklansky, Malmuth and a host of others, there is no shortage of outstanding advice and information available out there regarding the game of poker. The finest poker book of all in my opinion has been available for more than two thousand years. The concepts advanced within it can be successfully applied to poker in all its many variations from Hold'em to Razz. Written in ancient China by the renowned philosopher, successful general and noted political advisor, Sun Tzu, The Art of War has been a blueprint for achievement and success throughout the centuries. Figures like Napoleon, Patton, Mao, Ho Chi Minh, Donald Trump and Norman Schwarzkopf have credited The Art of War with responsibility for inspiring some of their most significant achievements. In The Art of War, Sun Tzu's approach to combat is thoroughly analytical. Like the very best poker players his method is predicated upon careful planning, complex analysis, complete preparation and formulation of an overall strategy which can be quickly adapted as circumstance and situation may dictate. Sun Tzu repeatedly emphasizes the importance of, and abiding need for rationality and self-control. Both are fundamental requirements for consistent success at the poker table. The Art of War stresses the crucial necessity of avoiding engagements which are entered into without extensive and detailed situational analysis. The calculations, assessments and preparations mandatory prior to engaging enemy forces in the field are discussed in depth. Most, if not all are relevant to the game of poker. Outside pressures such as haste, fear of being branded a coward and personal emotions such as anger, hatred and over-confidence are also discussed in The Art of War with Sun Tzu warning that they should be recognized, guarded against and never, ever permitted to adversely influence the decision making process. Sound like information which might improve your overall perspective and benefit your poker game? I certainly think it will. If you happen to be in the market for that next great poker book, you might want to pick up a copy of The Art of War by Sun Tzu and give it a good read. It could turn out to be just what you needed to take your game and perhaps many other endeavors in your life to a higher level of achievement and success. Daniel Stefan Dowdy 7. June, 2005
