The Divine Comedy
(Dante Alighieri)
Along poem it tells in 100 songs an imaginary travel through the three places in which, the spirits are destined after the dead women: hell, where the spirits of the sinners died in sin are punished; the Purgatory, where the spirits of the sorry in point of dead women discount the sins; the Paradise, where the spirits of the just ones enjoy the vision God. Dante is accompanied in the two first reigns from Virgil, the greatest Latin poet; in the Paradise the guide will be Beatrice, figure of woman loved from the poet in one's early youth. Virgil represents the apex of the reason and of the human wisdom, Beatrice represents the theology. Hell is represented like a greatest abyss that is shrunk low to funnel shape: the income is found under Jerusalem and the bottom is found to the centre of the Earth. The Purgatory is represented like one highest mountain in means to the Ocean in the austral hemisphere. The Paradise is formed from 9 transparent skies that routing around to the Earth one within the other, on the base of the astronomical acquaintances of the age. Dante and Virgil come down slowly along the circle infernal, go up to long hard work the flanks of the mountain. Then Beatrice guides Dante in flight from a sky to the other until the directed vision of God. Therefore Dante can meet in its way all the categories of spirits sinners, of spirits laxatives and of made happy spirits, it can see theirs pains and speak with some about they. The spirits are found placed in the three reigns second a precise hierarchy of faults and merits: who has sin more seriously is more far away from God and is punished more hardly, who has lead a Saint life is more close to God. Therefore, as an example, the traitors are found on the bottom of Hell: Cain (traitor of the brother), Brutus (traitor of Cesar, that it represents the legitimate one to be able) and Judas (traitor of the divinity) are chews to you in eternal from the three monstrous ones bocce of Lucifer. In the poem all it is imaginary, all is verisimilar, therefore all it is symbolic. The spirits all entirety represent the entire humanity. The Dante pilgrim, that he speaks with they, represents also he a man in tries of the truth: in the first place the truth who regards the destiny of the men after the dead women, but also the truth whom their behaviour regards during the life terrestrial, is like individuals is like human and Christian community. Therefore Dante, above all making to speak some really lived personages and you notice, faces the political problem, much controversial to its times. Same it, while the poem wrote, suffered a hard exile because of its political ideas. It wished a human community that he lived in peace and concord, that was governed from a single Emperor to which all the other monarchs were subject; he wished that the Pope did not have power and political authority, but that he dedicated himself exclusively to the spiritual cures. Instead to its times the Pope he expected the political authority to of over of the Emperor, and from this scandal he was born for all the incitement to the greed of being able and the violence, first moral every source of other and badly political one. That succeeded in Florence, the mother native land that with Dante was behaved from stepmother, as it happened in Italy, which had from the fights between the various cities, as it happened in the Christian world, upset from the contrasts between Guelfi (follows us of Pope) and Ghibellines (partisans of the Emperor). The cupidity it comes represented from a terrible animal, the she-wolf, than it is not never is satiated, couples with many other corruptors new beasts generating monster. The travel, the laborious route in the three reigns, constitutes therefore the fundamental metaphor of the distance that the man must complete in this life in order to take to conscience of its state of creature incline to the sin, to get rid from these bad impulses, to become a responsible citzen in the society, to follow the truth revealed from same God in the Writings, that they go interpreted through a corrected theological exercise. If the life earthly of every single citizen becomes preparation to the eternal life, also the Earthly City will be able to be formed to image of the Divine City, with the only difference that before will live in the dimension of the time, the second one will be eternal. Dante knows that its utopia will be come true difficultly, but knows also that this is the only one via for one pacific cohabitation of the people of the Christians (ecumene). Therefore it entrusts its message to the poetry, deduction the more effective channel to convince the high readers and to transmit truth therefore. But at the same time it does not use the Latin, the language of the official culture, uses dialect the from Tuscany one, one regional language of Italy, derived from the Latin and already refined from the literary exercise. In this way its message will be able to catch up also those that are not professionals excluded you of the culture.
