Municipal Corporation Of Delhi Sealing Halted In India
(GUNJAN SHARMA)
The sealing drive by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is an issue that has virtually stopped life in the capital for the past two days with angry traders relentlessly upping the ante. After a meeting of five hours, the Supreme Court Monitoring Committee decided to suspend the sealing drive without fixing a date for its resumption The meeting between the Supreme Court appointed monitoring Committee and the Delhi Municipal Corporation to decide on the course of action on Thursday dragged on for over five hours before the body came out with a mere one-line brief to the media: ?The Monitoring Commitee has decided that sealing cannot be resumed tomorrow,? said Monitoring Committee spokesperson D C Mathur. A Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee has said the sealing drive will not resume in New Delhi from Thursday (November 2). The decision was taken after a marathon meeting with the government and police following another day of violence in the capital. Earlier on Wednesday, the Centre told the committee that sealings cannot go on, citing law and order problems. But the committee has not fixed a date for resuming the sealing drive. Clearly the Monitoring Committee had little option but to postpone the sealing drive; it is learnt that the Delhi government had cited concerns over the law and order situation in the state, what with the ongoing violence and vandalism since the past 3 days putting authorities on a back foot. But the traders are not satisfied with the temporary respite they have earned from venting their wrath. ?We are fed up. Dragging out the matter by postponing it is not a solution. They are slowly and gradually crushing us to death. But we are going to fight it out till the last drop of blood in our body,? said traders. Temporary relief If the Supreme Court favourably considers the two petitions filed by the Centre and the Delhi Municipal Corporation, the traders could get an extended relief till January 31. But then again, legal experts say the case is unlikely to come up in the Supreme Court before Monday (November 6) as it has to come up before the Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court.
