MONOTONY may be reffered to as satiation for a given activity that the individual is compelled to continue in spite of his reluctance to do so.Monotony arises as in caseb of fatigue, due to continous work by the individual. It can be considered to be an unpleasant state arising out of work which the worker seeks to avoid as far as possible.
The main cause of monotony in work is the repetition of the repetitive nature of the activities involved in the task or lack of variety in it.Routine and repetitive work produces the maximum monotony A job which involves a variety of activities or variability in work is generally least monotonous.Another factor that contributes to monotony is the lack of interest on the part of the individual in the accomplishment of the work or the task carried out by him.A job which presnts no challenges whatso ever to the individual leads to monotony.
One of the major charecteristics of monotonous work is the unpleasant feelings the work arouses in the individual.Monotonous work leads to a feeling of boredom and an increasing feeling oftension as the individual continues to work. The tension generally arises from the conflict situation which the individual worker is subjected to.The individual may desire to discontinue the uninteresting activity but at the same time he realise that discontinuing the work would endanger the accomplishment of his future goals such as receiving monetary rewards for his labour, there fore seeks to avoid the unpleasant work without endangering the achievement of his future goal of receiving the monetary rewards. Thus he finds himself involved in the conflict situation which is charecterised by restlessness and dissatisfaction with work.Monotony is mainly dependent up on the individual rather than the job or the task.It is a characteristic of teh relationship between the job and the worker at a particular time.there are very individual differences in suceptibility to monotony. There exists considerable variation from individual to individual to individual .Some people experience great satisfaction in doing extremely routine and repititive jobs. While doing a job or working on a task, some people will indicate a great deal of monotony charecterised by restlessness, frequent shift in position, yawning persistently andoften by verbal expression dissatisfaction with work. Some others engaged in the job may consider the job absolutely free from boredom and indicate their intense interest in the job that may look very monotonous to an observer watching from outside may be very interesting to the person doing that job.
Generally people who are interested or not intelligent enough for a certain job often find it very monotonous. Those who enjoy working on a job often find it very monotonous, those who enjoy working on a job which invoves a lot of contact and dealing with other people may find a job monotonous if they have to work without any body around and had to deal with only machines and things. On the other hand a person who enjoys working with machines and things in an isolated environment may find a job involving meeting people monotonous.
People who normally feel happy while performing a routine and repitative work without experiencing monotony are those who are generally older ,who are satisfied with their job and who prefer a job with minimal responsibilities.Whether a job is regarded as monotonous or not by an individual depends also upon his interest in an occupation or a profession ,will find many challenging situations and prospects for the future improvement or promotion. At the same time a person who is not interested in the job may never find the situation to be challenging and may consider the job to be extremely monotonous or boring.
