Financial Expert
(R.K.Narayan)
?Money alone is important in this world?, the protagonist of R.K. Narayan?s ?Financial Expert? thinks like that. Krishna alias Margayya was obsessed with two things in his life. The first one was to acquire wealth and the second was his only son-Balu. He had nurtured positive visions about Balu?s future and had wanted Balu to study in good convent, where he could hobnob with the elite and grow into an aristocrat. In the process of acquiring wealth, Margayya neglects his son. Balu, brat of a boy tries to get his father?s attention by being extraordinarily mischievous and stubborn. Once, Balu gets wild when Margayya could not keep up his promise of getting a toy elephant. He kicks an inkpot which spoils Margayya?s accounts book. When Margayya tries to retrieve the besmirched book, Balu throws away the book into the gutter. Margayya establishes a new business and gets busier. As he slowly climbs the ladder of success, Balu?s life starts taking a downfall. Balu loses interest in studies and becomes short tempered. Critics have noted that the fortunes of Margayya are closely linked with the vicissitudes of his growing son. Margayya?s dreams get shattered when Balu fails in matriculation exams. He rues that he could not tell people ?my son is only fifteen and he has already passed into college?. Though disappointed and angered, Margayya tries to cajole Balu in kind words to make another attempt. He shows extreme consideration towards his son. But Balu does not pay heed to his father?s words and destroys his report card by throwing it in the gutter, thus putting an end to his father?s dream. Balu runs away from home, leaving Margayya dejected and helpless. Margayya gives vent to his anger by declaring ?a boy who has an utter disregard for his father?s feelings is no son?. Later, when Margayya receives the news of Balu?s supposed death, he blames himself. He craves for his son and leaves for Madras in search of him. Finally, he manages to trace Balu and brings him home. Balu takes advantage of his parents? emotions and never bothers to mend his ways. Thinking marriage may reform Balu; Margayya gets him married to Brinda. He arranges a separate accommodation for the newly married couple. But instead of becoming a responsible family man, Balu joins hands with Dr. Paul and starts indulging in immoral practices. He starts fleecing Margayya for money and finally demands his share of property. Margayya?s response to this demand is very dramatic. He offers Balu a half rupee coin and asks for receipt. When Balu becomes obstinate, Margayya slaps him but immediately repents and tries to soothe him. As the last resort, Margayya tries to draw Dr.Paul away from Balu. Being publicly insulted by Margayya, Dr.Paul takes his revenge by ruining Margayya?s money business, forcing him to take insolvency. Dr.Paul is even becomes instrumental in spoiling Balu?s relationship with Margayya. R.K.Narayan?s portrayal of the character-Margayya is quite humane. Being preoccupied with money and not spending enough time with his son is the only flaw we notice in Margayya?s role as a father. After all, he was earning money to see his son well educated and grow into an aristocrat. Whenever he gets a chance, Margayya tries to improve his relationship with Balu and struggles to bring him on the right track. His display of anger, frustration, dejection and helplessness towards his son is quite natural. On the other hand, we find Balu as a hopeless, good for nothing throughout the novel. He shirks responsibility and does not even attempt to mend his ways. He goes on spoiling his relationship with his father by careless and obstinate actions. Having lost his money and failed in his attempt to reform his son, Margayya invokes pity in reader?s mind. -------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------Abstractby: J.Prabha.
