(K.SUMAN KALYANI & S.K.NAIDU)
ABSTRACT: The FCV tobacco is grown in area of 60,000 ha both in SLS and SBS regions of Prakasam and Nellore districts under semi monsoon conditions. The tobacco grown in SLS and SBS regions is of neutral filler type, which has got international market demand. In the past few years, significant breakthrough has been made in the extension to popularize a variety of improved technologies through demonstrations and training programmes to improve the productivity and quality to enhance the socio economic status of the farming community. The enterprising farmers of both the regions are resorting to lower or over adoption of the scientific recommendations. Hence, there is an urgent need for deeper probe into the tobacco farming to know the extent to which the improved agricultural technologies are being adopted by them. In this backdrop, the present study was designed and carried out to ascertain the extent of adoption gap and also to find out the nature of constraints operating there in adopting the scientific technologies. A total of 80 farmers from SBS and SLS areas of Prakasam and Nellore districts were selected equally from both progressive and non progressive villages. Data was collected by a pre tested schedule. Adoption gap noticed in following the technologies like summer ploughing, spacing, green manuring, farmyard manure application, nitrogen application (excess). It was concluded that the efforts should be directed towardsreducing the adoption gap by introducing the scientific technologies to the farmers during Kisan melas, Farmers days, Exhibitions and through various mass media.
