The Divine Comedy
(Dante Alighieri)

Publicidade
Our great Philosophers and Writers of our glorious literary world propounded with their extraordinary tales to make the man?s realize his own self and true identity, which he often forgets only to find himself in the vicious circle of futility and anarchy. Even though he has fallen into this vicious circle still there is a scope of him to enshrine in his soul the moral and virtuous behavior so his journey take him straight to God without having to pass through the different circles of Inferno and Purgatorio i.e. through the partial hell, Complete hell, redemption stage and then finally to Paradiso. These three stages are the allegory or the Path through which Dante is shown himself passing through in his quest for the true Love Beatrice in his Divine Comedy. The ?Divine Comedy? is divided into 3 sections: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso and each are divided into 33 cantos (except Inferno, which has 34 cantos), and are written in tercets (groups of 3 lines). The number 3 was considered holy because the Father (God), Son (Jesus), and Holy Ghost comprised the trinity. Divine Comedy was written in the backdrop of the political struggle that engulfed Italy in 13th Century around 1300 between Guelphs and Ghibellines. Dante favored Guelphs, who advocated the Papacy over the Holy Roman Emperor. Florence's Guelphs split into factions around 1300: the White Guelphs opposed secular rule of Pope Boniface VIII and preferred Florence's independence, and the Black Guelphs favored the Pope's control of Florence. This led to Dante to be expelled and exiled from Florence in 1302 by the Lord-Mayor Cante dei Gabrielli di Gubbio, after troops under Charles of Valois entered the city, at the request of Boniface and in alliance with the Blacks. And in this period Dante produced the Work that became the greatest literary work of Art and central Epic Poem of Italian Literature and the First great work of Renaissance between 1308-1321.This poem started on Good Friday in 1300 in the middle of the Journey of Life ie Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita) therefore it is opened in Medias Res, ie in the middle of the theme. Dante?s journey began in the woods symbolic of suicide where he was suddenly attacked by the beasts a lion, a leopard, and a she-wolf; signifying his temptations towards sin from which he found himself incapable to escape and find his way towards Salvation. But his attempts started proving futile he found himself in the deep place (basso loco) where the sun is silent ('l sol tace), but fortunately for Dante, Virgil came to his rescue, send by Beatrice. From then on started his journey-A journey, which took him into hell represented by Inferno in Canto 1. Dante passed through the gate of Hell on which is inscribed the famous phrase, "Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate" or "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here." This clearly means those who enters the gate of Hell will have to abandon all hopes of salvation and destined to be cursed and Punishment in the Circles of Hell. But all hope is not lost as Dante entered second stage Purgatorio, where Vigil guides him towards seven terraces representing seven deadly sins. Naturally those who have committed the sins still have chance of penitence in these terraces where they repent for their sins like terrace One is an allegory of Pride, whereby a soul carries heavy weight on his back and the sinner is unable to stand up, only to show that Pride weighs heavy on the soul that should be shred off. In this way other terraces represents Envy, Wrath, sloth, Avarice and Prodigality, Gluttony and Lust, where all these vices are purified. After Crossing these seven Gates and witnessing the tales of the souls of the sinners repenting, he enters into Paradiso where he witnesses the nine spheres of heaven and the soul stops at the level to which they themselves are attributed for. In all the nine spheres he met the souls who have neglected the moral virtues and faith and alotted the spheres accord. Finally phase came when Dante actually comes into contact with God that?s above physical appearance, called the Empyrean Heaven and from here the realization of true Divinity comes to him. Dante got the inspiration from the many Scholars and Greek Philosophers like Aristotle. All the souls whom Dante met on the Journey are the real representatives of Roman and Contemporary to Dante?s Italian history depicting the complexities of the earthly human life and all the paradoxes of the nature in which he involves himself in and how the Individual soul progresses towards God which is his final destination, and from here he also derives the Man?s political and social journey towards peace on Earth. From this Epic, Dante tries to give man inspiration, insight, imagination and abilities to understand or to grasp the realities around him. Thus the Divine Comedy that?s composed of three parts, corresponds to the three stages of the soul accenting towards God through purgation, illumination, and unity, and this interlocking pattern kept the flow of lines moving from stanza to stanza and thus emerged the Greatest Work of Philosophy and Literature which became the Inspiration for many writers in the many Generations.
