Judge Dredd - Musak Killer

ENNIS, GARTH & POWER, DERMOT - JUDGE DREDD - MUSAK KILLER -2002 TITAN BOOKSTerrific satirical Comic strip graphic book about a futuristic serial killer. Marty Spok is into retro-sounds of the 20th century, such as the Smiths, REM, David Bowie, etc. He despises the new Musak of one hundred years or more lately. He hates it so much that he starts killing off the musak stars of his day, using weapons from the 20th century with which to do it. He is clearly insane, listening to his records backwards in order to hear the instructions on how to wage his one-man war. Judge Dredd gets onto his trail easily, but not before Spok learns that the celebrities of his day are planning on having a charity benefit concert to commemorate his victims, and boost their own failing careers. The killer realises that he has a chance to wipe out most of the awful musak stars he despises in one fell swoop. There are some terrific moments of dark comedy here. When one singer tells Judge Dredd that she won?t go on stage for fear of being assassinated by Spok Dredd tells her that failing to appear would make her responsible for starting a riot, which would in itself land her in prison. He orders her bylaw to get out and mime her act. The recognition of a lack of live performance from such talentless artistes is startling. Though shot and captured alive, Spok is successful. Dredd tells him that he cannot stop the musak simply because there is a market for it as he leads him off to prison. Spraying the audience with riot-foam, freezing everyone into a massive blobby heap on the mosh-pit floor, stops the potential riot. A great dig at music and musak tastes, and trends. A sequel, Musak Killer Live! Followed, and I have reviewed that for Shvoong too.
