(Frederick Forsyth)
The Veteran is an exotic assortment of four stories & one tiny novel, all bearing the unmistakable signature of forsythian suspense with nailbiting finish. While writing these stories the author Frederick Forsyth has taken a leave from his shadowy world of espionage & political treachery & has delved into the unfathomable labyrinth of human mind. The pentagram bouquet opens with the 'Veteran'; an apparently normal mugging incident goes wrong & is soon transformed into an interesting court battle where the bejeweled barrister James Vansittart simply steals away the two petty criminals Price & Cornish who were convicted of killing a nondescript person by his legal prowess. However the real charm still awaits the reader till the finishing line.'The art of the matter' revolves around the mystic & charming world of arts, auctions & vintage pictures. The story begins at the busy office of the House of Darcy, the renouned arts, auctioneers & valuers. While Slade clinches the deal of his life by depriving all, both Mr. Gore & Mr. Benny Evans, the wretched valuer of the concern get a raw deal. How they turn the table against Mr. Slade & enjoy the sweet taste of revenge awaits the reader with twists here & there for the ultimate satisfaction.'The Miracle' is a true short story that starts in Siena, modern day Italy & reels back to the turbulent days of the 16th century & again zooms forward to the blood lusty days of the last phase of the second world war. She becomes a nun & in the course time metamorphoses into an angel & her silent steps are imprinted in the folklore of Sienna.
