ABSTRACT: The socio economic conditions of the rural poor have a bearing effect on the preservation and protection of the environment. The present study examines the socio economic conditions of the rural poor, utilization of time- energy expenditure, method of disposal of wastes, the constituents of the physical wastes etc. The study revealed that a majority of 73.3% residents depend up on the bio fuels like firewood, dung cakes, and saw dust etc. for cooking. The physical waste of the locality mostly constituted degradable components providing scope for converting it to vermicompost. The study also explores the gender issues in the socio-economic set up and their contribution to the economy as supporting hands in the family maintenance at the cost of their health. They spend on an average 11hrs. per day accounting for 60.12 x106 k.cal/year as against 8hrs by men accounting for 52.15 k.cal/year. The paper also throws light on ecological issues.
