Speak
(Laurie Halse Anderson)

Publicidade
Speak is the story of a ninth grader, Melinda Sordino, who tries to make the best of a disadvantaged adjustment to high school, while holding onto a dark secret. During a party hosted by the high school seniors over summer, Melinda called the cops and busted the party, and consequently, became a ninth grade outcast. However, the reason why she called the cops remains trapped in her memory.Speak follows Melinda's daily life at school and at home and takes us on a first-person tour de force as Melinda struggles to survive her first year of high school. Through the many trials she faces, Melinda's story is an ultimately uplifting one as there is a glimmer of hope found as the story concludesAnderson divides the novel into four sections, each one identified as the current marking period (first, second, etc.), and divides each section into little episodic discourses, which very effectively capture the many happenings in Melinda's life during each period. This discourse format is used to it's absolute best, and Anderson crafts a very human, multi-dimensional protagonist who is easy to identify with as she faces issues that everyone has had to deal with at some point in their life. She also mixes in humour to lighten the tone of this story's darker themes.
