Ordinary Heroes
(Scott Turow)

Abstract of Ordinary Heroes, by Scott Turow.22/10/06Those of us fortunate enough to have known and lived with both of our parents may also share the good fortune of knowing about their heroic deeds. Our parents may be the unsung heroes who contributed to the growth of some organization, played a central role in some event, or sacrificed for the defense of a nation, great or small. But their lives remain ordinary in the eyes of the community around them especially those who do not care to dig too deeply beneath the surface. World War II is the setting for the David Dubin Story. The story unfolds as David?s son Stewart seeks to uncover the mystery behind his father?s silence surrounding his service, as a JAG officer in the United States Army during World War II.Mystery reveals adventure, heroism and the horrors of war, including the humiliation of captivity and the inhumanity of man towards man. On the surface this is common discourse almost to the point of cliché for so many who were involved in the military campaigns in Europe during World War II. But not every son has a father who inadvertently became mixed up in the early intrigue of the Cold War and not every son has a mother who was the faithful aid of a maverick OSS officer, a female warrior who captured his father?s heart, and almost cost him his freedom.Passion and deceit share a poetic bond as David Dubin pursues love and is twice deceived by his would be wife. After the war David Dubin and Gita Lodz construct an elaborate lie so they could spend the remainder of their lives together as husband and wife. Stewart and his sister Sarah, the couple?s children, themselves live the lie in which they were brought up, without any suspicion of the deceit that has been perpetrated. Along with the family, a Jewish community is deceived and David who changed his name to the original Dubinsky to embrace his ancestry is incensed when he discovers that he is only half Jewish after all.Passion and deceit also bind the characters David Dubin, Robert Martin, General Teedle and indeed the legendary OSS. Ironically, Martin?s passion to stop the development of nuclear weapons, leads him to his death. He has no knowledge about the progress of the Manhattan project in the USA. Indeed his own principals, the OSS do nothing to correct his false presumption that the Germans are in the lead in developing the world?s most powerful and destructive weapon. David Dubin had been placed on house arrest for aiding Martin?s escape. But the circumstances of his death, in Soviet custody, lead to David Dubin?s freedom, as suspicion of aiding the escape of a Soviet spy fades. General Teedle?s religious and anti-communist crusade is outdone only by Martin?s final quest to ?slay the dragon.? Meanwhile David Dubin?s actions, for better or for worse, are driven by a totally different kind of passion, the only passion that Dubin has left, for Gita Lodz to be his wife. The price of war is high. David Dubin and Gita Lodz needed to put the war behind them. Revealing the true identity of Gita Lodz would endanger the life that they had been able to build together in the USA. Thus the price of being acclaimed heroes and attracting public attention would be much too high. They did not need the lingering memories of bravery, passion, pain, and deceit. Neither did they need repeated flashbacks of relatives and friends being captured, killed and maimed. Enduring peace and safety were their rewards for silence. Francis H V Belle
