Publicidade
A soldier rescues a runaway heiress on his way to say good bye to his fallen comrades.Nicholas Blacklockhad always been a disappointment to his parents. His father demanded complete obedience from his entire family. Although Nick?s mother and older brother were docile and compliant, Nick himself was rebellious. He never seemed to do anything right; but, he never regretted his rash decisions. Nick joined the army against his father?s wishes. Despite the violence and the death, being a soldier was a marvelous adventure. Until the day his best friend died at Waterloo. Nick was injured as well and began having severe headaches. The doctors told him there was nothing they could do. He went home to try and make peace with his father; but it was too late. Lord Blacklock had been mortally wounded during the same hunt that had killed Nick?s older brother. Poor Lady Blacklock tended her husband right to the bitter end. Nick admired his mother?s devotion; but did not understand how a man who knew he was dying and truly loved his wife could endure her suffering in addition to his own. He left home without telling his mother the doctors expected him to die within months.Faith Merridew had always been the quiet sister. Musically talented but painfully shy, she had always followed where her more flamboyant twin Hope led. Then to her surprise, a celebrity musician began to court her. The charming rogue convinced her to leave London and elope with him. It all seemed wonderfully romantic at first. Then Faith discovered her ?husband? was already married (with children!) When she tried to confront the villain, he invited her to become his mistress. Far away from home and family, he felt she had little choice. To his surprise, Faith walked away (after a few choice words for the weasel). But a war-torn foreign country is no place for a lady. She soon attracts some highly aggressive men who will not take no for an answer. Then she runs into Nicholas, literally. Her unlikely knight errant listens to her tale of woe and makes her a proposition. He offers to marry her; if she will promise to leave right after the wedding and look after his mother. Faith agrees but later thinks to wonder at his strange conditions.Faith decides that Nick needs her more than his mother does. So she follows him on his pilgrimage to his best friend?s grave. But Nick is not just honoring a fallen comrade. Nicholas is on a death march. He has consulted specialists, physicians and healers from all over Europe. They all agree he hasn?t got long to live. But Faith knows a few things the doctors don?t teach in school.
