Judge Dredd - Talkback
(ENNIS, GARTH & BURNS, JOHN)
ENNIS, GARTH & BURNS, JOHN - JUDGE DREDD - TALKBACKinJUSTICE ONE 2002 TITAN BOOKS. A very funny, but also rather sad little Judge Dredd tale. A radio DJ?s dead body is found in a rubbish crushing machine at his flat after neighbours hear him screaming in his last moments of life. The judges find enough to identify him, and realise that his death shows more signs of suicide than murder. They call in one of their Psi-specialists, a psychic judge, who touches the bucket of bits that are left of the DJ. The Psi-Judge almost goes mad, but he has found out about the DJ?s lat few days on Earth. The DJ has been broadcasting, and has heard various people phoning in telling him to kill himself. He tries to throw himself down a lift shaft, and considers swallowing razor blades. The other staffs at the radio station have however heard the same broadcasts and they have not heard any death threats or death-wish messages for him or for anyone else. They assume that the DJ is having a nervous breakdown, so they send him home for a while. Once there, he hears even more death wish messages and takes up the invitation, hurling himself to his doom. The Psi ?Judge realises that the DJ is actually psychic. He has realised that he isn?t popular or cool because he has heard the hatred everyone has at the sound of his voice piping through the airwaves at him day after day. The collective hatred has fed back on him and driven him to take his own life. The digs at Radio One, the BBC radio station abound, i.e. the DJ living in Bruno Brook House (BB being a real BBC Radio DJ). Dredd has little to do in this story, but it is certainly inventive.
