Prayer My Soul's Adventure With God
(Robert H. Schuller)
This book is such a blessing! Dr. Schuller describes his prayer life as it relates to life events. What he prayed for, whom he prayed for, when he prayed and the results. He has discovered that there are 7 levels of prayer. These he discovered along his life's journey, when God was ready to reveal them to him. He describes an amazing adventure! Dr. Schuller has met with many leaders in America and abroad. He slept in the Lincoln bedroom at the White House and has toured the secret inner sanctum of Russia's leader, Vladimir Lenin. While at the Kremlin, Dr. Schuller was told a story about Lenin. When he was 15 years old, an Orthodox minister told his church class that the cross is a symbol of human suffering and that suffering is a good thing. It was at that moment that Lenin rejected Christianity. What might have happend in the history of the Soviet Union if that one negative story had not been told. What if Lenin was exposed to Dr. Schuller's concept of "Possibility Thinking?" The whole world might have become a different place! That is certainly something not taught in our history classes! There are all sorts of little gems of knowledge in this book, but the main feature is Dr. Schuller's description of the 7 levels of prayer. This is how he communicates with God, and it seems to me, a good way. Level One: The dream level. This is where God plants his dream for you in your mind. You pray about it, and that strengthens your image of your dream. It creates excitement in you to move forward with that dream. Level Two: This is where you connect with God to ask for his help in attaining your dream. You will always be met with obstacles in reaching your goals. This is where you put your dream into God's hands. You do the work, God finds a way. Level Three: Caring for others. Here you intercede with God on behalf of others. Ask God to help people who are in need of his help. Dr. Schuller answers the question: "How can I pray for those I cannot love?" (You have to read the book to find the answer) Level Four: Connecting with God. This is the level where you learn to set goals and priorities with God's adgenda in mind. Not what you want, but what He wants. This is the level of enlightenment, where you ask not for things or property, but for wisdom. This is where you prayers become a two-way conversation. Level Five: Quiet your mind, listen, meditate. Dr. Schuller describes how to meditate. This is where we open up to God's answers and gain strength. We can revive our depleted spirits and come back to our lives with passion and energy! And it's not hard. Even just going to church can be a form of meditation. You don't need all of this New Age stuff. No sitting cross legged on the floor. Just relax and listen for God to talk to you. Level Six: Praise and Thanksgiving, even in the midst of pain. So you or someone you love is suffering. Critically ill, injured, broke, friendless. The message is: Praise God anyway! Let God hear your praise in prayer. Thank him for good doctors, people who are there to help, the skills and gifts that you do have. God will see you through your crisis. Thank the Lord daily for what you do have. "Our thoughts and actions of sincere gratitude delight the heart of our glorious, giving God." Level Seven: Lord, Make Me a Blessing. Yes, asking God to make you a blessing to other people is the highest level of prayer. It communicates an unselfishness that does not abound in most of us. We think: Me, Me, Me, when we should be thinking, "How can I help someone else?" "How can I be a blessing to others?" In this book, Dr. Schuller describes life with prayer as an exciting adventure filled with great possibilities. Thatis the essence of "Possibility Thinking." Bringing that postive light to prayer helps to make life with God relevant to our real lives. Life with God melds with our real life to make a whole. What a wonderful, exciting, message!
