MOLCHER, MIKE (EDITOR) THE END IS NIGH ? Magazine that takes a Fortean Times look at thee ways in which people believe that the end of the World, or civilisation as we know it might be imminent, or not, as the case may be. Issues take a specific aspect of Apocalypse watching. Issue three focuses on the threats from outer space, such as Asteroids colliding with earth and alien invasions. Issue four deals with nature taking its own back on humanity, etc. There are also features on media predictions hinting at our impending doom, and essays on doomsayers over the ages. With input from many Science Fiction artists, including SMS (Of Interzone fame), and writers Leah Moore and Ken Crossley, the magazine has a healthy creative energy and more than an air of scepticism about its subject matter. Serious articles, such as the issue three attack on George W. Bush?s passion for the apocalypse (many on the Christian Right are looking forward to it), and fears about Bird Flue wiping out humanity abound. There are also humorous asides such as a cut out and fold anti-alien attack hat you can make for yourself. One feature tells us why 2012 has become the new favourite year of Armageddon now that 2000 has been and gone without us being annihilated. We are advised that crackpots like David Icke even think the Illuminati orchestrated the 9/11 terrorist attacks to help bring about Doomsday by 2012. The balance of fact, fantasy, humour, (advise to aliens on how to go about taking over the earth and what to do with it once they have it) and speculation is very well handled and the large format of the magazine gives it plenty of foods for thought. The magazine gets deserving thumbs up from Alan Moore, the SF Graphic Novels maestro. Hopefully a magazine that will attract wide attention, - hopefully before it is too late. Get a copy for your fall-out shelter now. You know it makes sense.
