Bilbo Baggins is doing what he has always done; living his quiet, uneventful life in his little house. Before the first chapter is complete, however, he has encountered Gandalf, the most famous wizard of them all, and had his house over-run by thirteen cake-eating, beer-swilling dwarfs. Welcome J.R.R. Tolkien?s magical world, the world of The Hobbit.This is a superb novel, for young and old alike. We follow Bilbo as he is suddenly thrust into a world of adventure, heroism, excitement and danger. The dwarves and Bilbo are heading towards The Lonely Mountain in order to subdue Smaug, the dragon, and to capture his hoard of treasure. Much of the novel is taken up with their long journey to the mountain; a journey which involves attack by goblins, a meeting with Beorn the shape-changer; a journey through the terrifying forest of Mirkwood; imprisonment by the elves and arrival at the town of men. In overcoming all their obstacles the dwarves, like the reader, are filled with relief; forgetting that the hard part ? the battle with Smaug ? is still to come.The climax of the novel is truly superb. One of the greatest battles in literature ensues as elves, dwarves and men forget their bickering and join forces in opposition to the massed ranks of the goblins and their allies, the wolves.J.R.R. Tolkien does the seemingly impossible. He can simultaneously create the most magical world and yet create a world and characters which soon draw the reader in and which become only too believable. There is not a page of this novel where something amazing doesn?t happen as we follow Bilbo in his quest and watch as this quiet little hobbit becomes ever more confident and brave. Fantasy novels fall into a genre which tends to have a particular readership ? these stories tend to be either loved or hated. However, The Hobbit is a novel which everyone should read and which, I?m sure, the vast majority will enjoy.
