The Sin Of Colour
(Sunetra Gupta)

Publicidade
A sin of colour by Sunetra Gupta: Debendranath Roy, was a member of an elitefamily living in Calcutta. He lived in a beautiful sprawling colonial style house called Mandalay, must likely in an attempt to liken the structure, décor and style of this house to the novel Rebeccamby Daphne Du Maurier. The story revolves around Debendranath and the unrequited love that he bears for his brother?s wife, which is similar to Du Maurier?s novel. As in the novel, "Rebecca? the husband was presumed by his new wife to still be in love with his dead ex-wife which was compounded by the sinister housekeeper who slid silently and eerily through the big rumbling house and making sly comments. Here the similariites end. Debendranathis the last son of parents who were locked in a loveless marriage. Loveless, because it was an arranged marriage for his mother, but was enforced, because Debendranath?s father had cast his lustful gaze on her. The similarity of his parents life and his are paramount in the descriptions in the book, of his marriage, his parents and his niece. His dad was silently and deeply in love with his mother, but it was in vain becuase his mother so distraught at been unable to complete her education due to silent disapproval of her in-laws and the constraints of marriage, did not return his love and was totally devoid of any demonstrative love to her family and lived her whole existence in complete ignorance of who her children and husband were. Debendranth who could not live in the same house as his sister in-law, decided to travel to Britain for further studies. He married his landlord?s daughter and after a few years of living in a relatively happy, but mundane life ,he disappeared and was presumed dead. Then twenty years later he turned up unexpectedly. Unfortunately, his reappearance did not quench his love for his brothers wife. His niece, whose mother he was in love with, also fell in love with a married man, then they separated and then reunited. Unfortunately, both then committed suicide. I attempted to pinpoint the universal message in the book, and it appears to be tradition and cultural differences and the price people have to pay byadapting their lives to them or not.It is the vicious cycle of tradition and modernity.
