ALAN BENNETT - UNTOLD STORIES

?We started off trying to set up a small anarchist community, but people wouldn't obey the rules.?
I?m here to try and explain why Alan Bennett is so amazing but I?m not really sure that I can do it justice. Born in Leeds in 1934 Bennett may seem far removed from anything that anyone reading this would find relevant but that?s where your assumption would be so, so wrong. The is something timeless about Bennett?s plays, scripts and writings and his superb 90?s monologues ?Talking Heads? can only be seen to be believed. Bennett has an astonishing knack of being able to pin point peoples characters exactly through wry observations which could only come from a quiet, rather precise man. And I know that Bennett?s ?national institution? status and the fact that your mum and dad (or even your grandma) probably think he?s great I beg you to think again. Bennett characterizes exactly traits in people and himself that ordinarily people could be quite ashamed of and that is a skill to be admired. So I hope that even in the very smallest way I have made a case for this fabulous observational writer. His ?Telling Tales? autobiography is a great place to start. An often bleak look at the life of a writer often revered but possibly more frequently misunderstood. Touching anecdotes documenting the lives and subsequent decline of his parents. It is only in his 70?s that we can see a true retrospective of Bennett?s career and life which documents as recently as his new play ?The History Boys? and as far back as his earliest memories. It is a testament to his character and that of his family ? not wanting to make a fuss? that he has waited till his twilight years to write this stunning memoir remaining loyal to his famous assumption ?Your whole life is on the other side of the glass, and there is no one watching?.

You can see The History Boys; Bennett?s most recent play on its current u.k tour on failing that you can pick up a copy of ?Untold Stories? published by Faber at any good book shop.

(Untold stories recently won a national book award which saw shy Alan being cajoled and photographed with the likes of media strumpet Kerry McFadden and Jodie Marsh, poor old him).
