The Lost World
(Arthur Conan Doyle)
The scientific world is shaken ? there is a claim that, against all beliefs, the dinosaurs did not become extinct, but had survived on some plateau located in the wild tropical forests of South America (more precisely, in Venezuela). The scientist, claiming the existence of dinosaurs is the scandalously known Professor Challenger. In order to bring a proof to the scientific community, an expedition is set out.The people volunteering to take a partinthe discovery adventureare coming from various backgrounds and are joining for the very different reasons: Prof. Summerlee, a distinguished scientist, is determined to prove that the stories told by Prof. Challenger are all lies and fruits of a vivid imagination; Lord John Roxton, a known hunter, is interested in hunting new exotic species, and, finally, journalist Ed Malone is joining for very personal reasons - he has to prove his fiancée and himself that he is a man of strong character who can withstand dangers and challenges of a real adventure. Prof. Challenger joins the group in order to be their guide and lead them to the lost plateau.Upon arrival to the plateau, it is clear that Prof. Challenger was not exaggerating ? the dinosaurs are real. The group decides to reach the plateau in order to collect evidence, but, unfortunately, their improvised bridge is sabotaged and they do not have any other choice but to stay on the plateau and to fight for their lives, while trying to find their way out. Many adventures are waiting for them: numerous encounters with the most dangerous species of dinosaurs, kidnapping by ape-like creatures? Finally, the expedition members encounter a human tribe, and discover that several caves inhabited by the tribe lead to the base of the plateau. This fact gives the group opportunity to escape the plateau with its deadly inhabitants. As a proof, a pterodactyl is brought to London, to be shown to the Scientific Society, but, unfortunately, it gets free and escapes before being recognized. While staying on the plateau, Lord Roxton had found clay that was later discovered to contain diamonds. After the money is split between the members of the expedition, each one of them has future plans: Prof. Challenger is going to open a museum; Prof. Summerlee is going to retire, while Lord Roxton and Edward Malone are organizing an additional expedition to the lost world.
