The Chosen
(Chaim Potok)
"The Chosen", by acclaimed author Chaim Potok, perhaps rings truer now then it did during its original publication in 1967. Set in New York during WWII, it is the story of two young men who, despite religious and social adversity become soul-friends. Reuven Malter is the son of a Jewish Yeshiva professor and political activist when he meets and befriends Danny Saunders, the son of a Hasidic rabbi in an epic ball-game whose theme would shape their entire lives. Both are put to the test as the Holocaust is revealed to their American community and the resulting theological differences between their families force a rift between them. It is a classic story that takes on religious persecution, bigotry, and the true meaning of friendship.
