The Gospel According To Jesuschrist
(José Saramago)
This novel doesn't require a summary, it's an invitation to pause and ponder because it describes the best known event in the history of humanity. It consists of a literary version of the Gospel from the birth of Christ in Bethlehem to his crucifixion. Of course the narrator is not one of the evangelists and it's very unlikely these pages will ever be read from a church's pulpit. The novel begins with the divine concepcion, a scene where the holy ghost goes completely amiss. An explicit scene of carnal knowledge between Mary and Joseph begins this story and sets the tone of reality. The author tries to expose the human side of Jesus instead of his divinity and succeeds at weaving a psychological plot where the human miseries of the son of god do not diminish his spiritual strenght. Something must happen in the life of a man for him to choose to embody the identity of the son of God be willing to die like a human on the cross to save the world. A specific event in his childhood, a slaughter of children from which he was spared brands him with a sense of guilt inherited from his father. He will never be rid of this guilt unless he follows the destiny that points at him as the son of god. Jesus becomes Christ and he assumes the responsibility imposed upon him by fate. In a final meeting with god he is let in to a secret for which he was not prepared. This version of the Gospel could not offend anyone if it weren't so well written and so credible.
