The Pedicab Man
(VoHoan)

Publicidade
One evening I planned to visit a friend who live in the outskirts of the city. While standing on the street to look for a ride I saw a three-wheeled pedicab approached and the pedicab man said to me :
_ Where do you want to go ?
_ how much for a ride to the outskirts of the city ? I asked
_ Five thousand s, Sir. He replied
I was pleased right away with the price he offered to me because he didn't overcharge but gave me the right price. I felt safe with his ride. He did a smooth ride, not too slow not in a hurry
_ You know, there have been so many accidents on the streets during these days. He said
Through the conservation with him, I knew his family situation. He and his wife worked in a factory, has two kids, one seven years old boy and one five years old girl. He rode the pedicab as a side job to make extra money to support his family. He boasted of the school performance of his children. Then he confided :
_ Riding pedicad is a hard job especially in a hot or rainy days but when I thought about the future of my two young kids I don't mind the hard work. I want to give them an education, that is better than giving money. Money is consumed but education made able people. It gives you opportunities, isn't it ?
His words were simple but meaningful. They were drawn not from the books but from his own life experiences. He related :
_ My parents had ten children. I am the youngest. Even not well-off they produced one kid every year. You know, at the time of my parents, there was no family planning, no birth contrlol pills at all. You see it was hard to put enough food on the table for twelve person. That was the reason why all of us didn't have enough education. I don't want this happens to my kids anymore. I has only two. I decide to give them an education, an opportunity. For that reason I do side job to save money for their college. It is really hard. But when I thought they were good kids, I feel happy. Upon stepping out of the pedicab, I said to him :
_ I would come home at about nine o'clock. If you are free, and have a chance you can wait for me here.
When I got out of the house of my friend at nine. It was dark. He was already there waiting for me. He said to me he got a couple of thousands just during the time I was in the house. On the way to my house he suddenly stopped by a house
_ I am sorry. Can you wait for me awhile ? He apolozized. He then ran into a house nearby. He counted his money and showed it to a lady sitting in front of the house. When he came back, under the light of the street lamp I saw his face running wet with sweat but he looked happy. I supposed he was contented with what he has done. He explained to me :
_I put money in a saving account, the money from the pedicab riding. Next month I will withrawn the money and would buy a banjo for my boy
_ Ah ! i mumbled in a pleasant surprise. He cared not only of the education of the kids but also of their artistic vocation. While riding the pedicab he said proudly about his children :
_ They are good kids. well-behaved and didn't play around with the ill-bred kids. They like to play the music but never ask me to buy the instrument for them
Upon reaching my home, I showed him the fare
_ Thank you very much. I ride home now. He said
He was absorbed in riding his pedicab on the busy street. I knew he was in hurry, in hurry because at the end of the street, there were an industrious wife and two small kids impatiently waiting for him in a little house. I felt like I heard a musical melody echoed out from inside his castle down the road
