Fugitive Pieces
(Anne Michaels)

The author used many poetic figure of speech. The vocabulary level is kind of high. Actually the vocabulary levelis too high for me -- they say a book that is suitable for someone to read should contain about five new vocabs per page. I encounter at least twenty each page. However some descriptions are indeed very vivid and beautiful. I could not help but read them twice, hoping I could remember them( and use them somewhere someday). The author not only used poetic vocabs, but also geographic terms, because the main character, Athos,is a geographicexpert.I could manage to skeme through without understanding what each word means. I might have lost the beauty of the content; however, I could still understand what is going on. It takes too much time to check the meaning of each new word, and I may lose sight of the entire context. I would really envy someone who could understand most words, though. It must be a even more enjoyble reading experience. I never knew there was ever a war among German, Italian, and British on Greece. I never knew, neither, that there was a holocaust in Greece. I am guessing the title" fugitive" means the refuge experience of Jewish, which is also the identity of another main character, Jacob, who was saved by Athos while all his family members were killed.

The author continues to show strength in use of metaphors and similes. Here is one of the good sentences: "The forest closed around me like a hag's embrace, all hair and hot breath, bristly skin and sharp fingernails." There is also some humours blended in. This is shown in the examples below: " the blankets ripped from a bed leaving the surprised sleepers untouched." " A woman carried sixty feet then deposited in a field next to a phonograph record( unscratched) of ' Stormy Weather.' " The author also attemped to show her knowledge in some academic areas, such as weather and music, besides archeology and geography, whichwere mentioned in the previous review. In the novel the value of family is explored. For example, Jakob's love for his sister Bella, and Ben's relationship and discovery with his parents. The story is largely based on immigrants. The characters in the novel were immigrated from Greece or Poland to Canada, where they meet in the Canadian city Toronto. There were some flashbacks and memories about their mother country mentioned along the story line. There were a couple of intimate relationships in the story: Ben and Niaomi, Jakob and Michaela. These love matches were vividly described. The sweetness and spriritual compatibility in their relationships were demonstrated. My problem with the vocabulary seemed to ease up when I was approaching the end of the novel. This is either because therewere less difficult vocabularies, or Iwas used to the frequency of appearance of hard vocabs. In fact, I started to learn words that sounded familiar but were never learned, for example, the words "cardigan", "avalanche", and " obliviousness." In conclusion, this is a beautifully written novel. For me the language part is the most engaging. I recommend it for casual reading. You will be able to appreciate it as an art piece.
