(Hibernian Scribe)

The Benefits of massage. Self development through massage. Abraham Maslow managed to balance the psychological books. Prior to Maslow , psychologists like Freud and his contemporaries focused exclusively on what made people ill, physically and psychologically. Maslow was more interested in what made people healthy. He succeeded in highlighting those attributes contributing to personal development and personal growth. Maslow proposed the concept of self actualization. He believed that fulfilling one's potential in life leading to actualization of potentials, talents and capacities. Living a meaningful and diverse life through healthy relationships enriches our lives leading to a healthy and happier world. Through massage we actualize our relationships through touch. New knowledge, new confidence When we practice massage we enter a new world of art and science. Learning and experiencing, develops a new body perspective. This new vision is a lifelong process, starting with our first class when we sense a variety of people's bodies for the first time. For most of us this is a quantum leap into a new field. This brings us new insights and understanding whilst massaging patients. We learn body texture is very different in a young child and as the person develops into adolescence and beyond. We learn the art and science of massage which gives us confidence in ourselves. We learn communication through touch, which is under utilized in the modern world. This skill may greatly enhance our relationships with patients.Enhanced self image Poor posture mirrors poor self esteem. Western society suffers from poor body image. I rarely meet a woman who is happy with her body. In affluent societies men increasingly adopt similar attitudes. Women's colour magazines promote the image of the perfect woman and indeed the perfect man, which is unattainable. When you become adept at palpation and massage, from practicing on patients, one becomes aware these images are a myth. There is no such thing as a perfect body. Often, What the media considers beautiful is mere fashion. In many traditional cultures having a strong robust frame with large hips and breasts are often the symbols of beauty, this frame reflects fertility and good health. In Victorian times beauty was reflected in a pale complexion, as tanned people were labourers and farmers, a lower social order. In India in the 1980?s, it was trendy to be fat and therefore attractive. Massage heightens our awareness of the myth of beauty, helping us accept the bodies we were born with as beautiful thus enhancing our own personal self esteem.Processing data, please wait ...
