Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince
(J.K Rowling)

The ?second war? foretold among the wizarding community is underway. Fear and panic pervade as Lord Voldemorts followers stalk the land, leaving misery, catastrophe? and death in their wake.

Harry Potter meanwhile, prepares to return to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for his sixth year of studies, contemplating a future that must ultimately end in the death of either himself or the Dark Lord at the hand of the other. Also returning to Hogwarts after an absence of many years, is ex-potions master Horace Slughorn, a man burdened by troubled memories that he is desperate to keep hidden. Somebody else apparently nurturing guilty secrets, is Draco Malfoy whose suspicious behaviour convinces Harry that he has been recruited as a ?Death Eater?, and granted a special task to carry out. In order to better equip Harry for the battles which lie ahead, Dumbledore accompanies him on a series of fascinating journeys into past memories. We witness first hand, the troubled, poverty stricken backdrop, to the birth, in a run down London orphanage, of Tom Riddle ? the boy who would grow up to become Lord Voldemort. We later see Tom the orphan being invited by Dumbledore to attend Hogwarts, and later still as a student, growing in confidence as the now familiar characteristics of the Dark Lord begin to emerge.

Back in the present, Harry enjoys assistance from an unexpected source during his potions classes. The scribbled amendments to instructions in his old text book produce spectacular results which (much to the annoyance of his friends) earn him rave reviews from Professor Slughorn. The identity of the book?s previous owner is unknown, only his self styled nickname appears on the back cover ? the ?Half Blood Prince?. Continuing his trips into the past with Dumbledore, Harry begins to understand Lord Voldemorts obsession with achieving eternal life, and therein, the possible key to his destruction. The final piece of the jigsaw would seem to lie within an old, closely guarded memory of Professor Slughorn, which Harry is tasked to retrieve, but fails miserably on his first attempt.

Despite the distractions of a romance with Ginny Weasley, Malfoy?s increasingly odd behaviour and attempts to discover the true identity of the ?Prince?, Harry eventually persuades Slughorn to reveal his memory ? a memory of a conversation with the young Tom Riddle - that confirms Dumbledore?s worst fears about his ambitions. Harry and Dumbledore set out on an ultimately unsuccessful mission to thwart Lord Voldemorts plan, and on their return to Hogwarts find the castle under attack from the Death Eaters, the ?Dark Mark? flying above. In the ensuing battle, Harry endures yet more great personal tragedy, as the truth behind Malfoy?s mission, and the real identity of the ?Half Blood Prince? are finally revealed?

The stage has been set; J.K Rowling has ensured that a fever pitch of excitement and speculation will anticipate the release of the final chapter in the Harry Potter series. Her fascinating insights into the origins of Lord Voldemort, and the revelations of the ?true colours? of other characters, will leave readers desperate to discover what happens next? Only the slightly uncomfortable romance between Harry and Ginny (and particularly the hinted one between Ron & Hermione) fail entirely to convince in an otherwise enthralling read. Rowling has tantalised us by throwing out a thousand loose ends into our imaginations. Internet forums are already rife with theories (ranging from the clever to the cringe worthy) as to how these issues will be resolved, but only one person really knows the answers, and she ain?t telling yet?
