I Know You Got Soul
(Clarkson;Jeremy)

Publicidade
For those who are unfamilar with Jeremy Clarkson, he is a co-host of a massively popular TV programme on the UK's BBC 2, called Top Gear, which is a motoring show. He is also a newspaper columnist (though he wouldn't call himself one) and an author. I Know You Got Soul is Clarkson's personal list of amazing machines of the Industrial Age - from the SS Great Britain to the Space Shuttle, in which he argues that although everyone knows machines are just a collection of wires and plastic, certain machines have a'soul'. A glance at the contents page reveals that he doesn't just stick to cars, far from it. He includes machines thattravel on the oceans, in the sky, on rails and in space, and some machines which do not travel at all. Some of his choices will raise eyebrows, such as the AK47 and the B52, machines that were invented for one purpose only, to kill. He is the first to acknowledge this, and if the reader can see past this detail, then you will find yourself nodding in agreement along with him. Ask yourself this - think of a gun of any kind, and the AK47 will be foremost among your thoughts. As he rightly points out, this weapon even makes an appearance on national flags. Other choices will make you scratch your head (the Millenium Falcon?) but even these he gives good reasons for including in the book. And yet others you know would have to have been included, such as Concorde and the Spitfire.Throughout the book he retains his inimitable style. Readers who are familiar with Clarkson will know that the politically correct are not his biggest fans, and it is interesting, though not surprising, that anything that is operated by pedal-power is not included. There is something in every chapter that made me laugh, and there is also a section of outstanding pictures that accompany each machine he describes, some of which are well known, such as the haunting images of the Air France Concorde which crashed in Paris on take-off, and the Hindenberg plummeting to the ground in flames, and others which are just mesmerising, as the photos of the Space Shuttle lifting off and a battleship of the Iowa-class giving a full broadside of 16 inch guns. All-in-all, an extremely funny and entertaining book.
