I'm an Indian living in one of the most largly populated metropolitan cities in the world-New Delhi. As such, my entire life has been an interesting and sometimes frustrating mash-up of the new world and the old traditions. I think its no wonder that Indians as well as foreigners alike are drawn to the utopian land of Goa in South west India, drawn to its magical blend of old and new. Goa becameTHE hippiehome in the early-mid seventies, and one such goa 'freak' was Cleo Odzer. a rich jewish American girl who began her journey touring Europe in her sleep-in car, modeling for money, and then caught a bus from Athens to Goa. her book, written almost 2 decades after she left India at the age of 29 captures not only the wild coke spun parties the goa freaks ingulged in on paradise island 'Anjuna', and the wonderful uninhibited community love. But also the much darker side of life mottled with death, desperation and dangerously illegal activities.
the book explores her arrival in Goa, her relationships with people along the way. her fabulous home (with the first indoor toilet on Anjuna), turned coke housewhere Cleo held her card sessions. Unabashed, Cleo guides us throughher sexual affairsaffairs, her intense relationship with smack, her time in Bali. The fantastic winter 'seasons' in Goa where every night was a party, to the threadbare off-season summers whenthewell-connectedgoa freaks took off smuggling drugs in ingenious suitcases to Canada and America.
Cleo Odzer P.H.D. returned to Goa in 2000, two decades after she had left its sandy shores. during her lifetime she wrote 3 best selling novels including the 'patpog sisters' and 'virtual spaces'. She died of a stroke in March 2001, in her beloved true home- Goa.
