The Cherry Orchard
(Anton Chekhov)

Publicidade
I remember studyingAnton Chekov's lastplay, the cherry orchard, during A-level theatre studies, having to dissect the meaning andpull out theintentions of the characters.I soon found a productionof the play at the Leicester hay market theatre in england which i enjoyed so much and also had the pleasure of talking to the cast and director after the performance. The play holds some comical scenes and farcical value which first wasdirected by stanislavski as a tragedyat the Moscow arts theatre sometime in theearly 1900's. The interpretationdeeply outraged Chekov and caused him and stanislavski to argue.Chekov's writing has a unique ability to draw you into the atmosphere and empathize with all the characters. All 15 charactershave very russian names that i wouldn't begin to attempt to spell !! Lost in their own selfness, not selfishness, but dreams, desires, loyalty and values. The scene is set in an old estate which, as the title suggests has a cherry tree orchard.A russian woman and herfamilywho own the orchard fall into debts they have no way of paying and so, after returning from a trip to Paris they find the house will be sold at auction. One option presented to them are from a real estate friend/businessman who proposes they build cottages on the grounds of the orchard and build an income business from the rents. The family ignores the impending doom lurking, and have one last party, they make plans for a wedding they fall in love, with the wrong peopleand they play billiards. The play takes on aview from aristocratic russian life and their loss of reality and ignorance of the consequences of their actions. After reading this book you will be dying to find a production of it in atheater to meet the characters and to see how the particular directer will interpret Chekov's writing!
