7 Kinds Of Smart: Identifying And Developing Your Multiple Intelligences
(Thomas Armstrong, PH. D.)
Acclaimed author and educator PH.D Thomas Armstrong explains that different people are innately talented in different ways in his book about multiple intelligences.According to the author of The Myth of the A.D.D. Child, a person can be smart in 7 different ways. Although almost everyone is moderately capable in all seven areas and most people display an aptitude in two or three types, very few people excel in five or more varieties of intelligence. A very few people are expert in one area and highly deficient in all other areas. An extremely rare individual will demonstrate an innate competence in all areas of intelligence. There are seven various kinds of intelligence.1) Linguistic smart or the knowledge of words is the most verbalized type of intelligence. The ability to debate (orators), persuade (journalists and politicians) and instruct (educators) is more popular than any of the others perhaps because society communicates through words.2) Logical/Mathematical smart is the ability to form chains of reasoning and understand numbers. Those who excel in one of these areas (mathematicians and accountants) almost always excel in the other (scientists and logistics experts).3) Spatial smart is the ability to visualize and manipulate images and pictures. Architects, photographers, sculptors and engineers are among those innately gifted with spatial intelligence.4) Musical smart is the ability to communicate through tone and rhythm. Composers, vocal artists and those who play musical instruments have an aptitude for music.5) Kinesthetic literally means motion sensitive. Those with abilities such as athletes, dancers and physical therapists, display body smart.6) Interpersonal smart refers to social skills. Counselors, sociologists, administrators and psychologists have developed a special sensitivity or empathy for others.7) Intrapersonal smart is the ability to understand self. Fiercely independent, highly goal directed and intensely self disciplined, those who understand themselves often display phenomenal leadership ability.Although the title is ?7 Kinds of Smart?, Dr. Armstrong describes two other types of intelligence. The other types of smart apply to living things other than humanity.8) Naturalists are those people who understand plants and animals.a) Herbalists and botanists (plant experts).b) Veterinarians and zoologists (animal experts).9) Existentialists are philosophers and theologians. Those who seek to understand humanity?s purpose in the grand scheme of things display a unique perspective and capacity to connect with a greater intelligence.
