Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)

Publicidade
A classic romance, Austen's Pride and Prejudice remains undateable in spite of changing mores and fashions. Jane Austen probably never had a soft sigh breathed into her ear [she was a spinster, a word that she probably mocked at], but probably that is why the story has beenwritten with such captivating attention to human interaction for it was written by an observer who saw the game. Yet,her delicately ironic expressions never become cynicaland that is why Pride and Prejudice continues to fascinate each generation of readers.

Elizabeth Bennet, the spirited and independent-minded heroine is the second of five sisters whose mother has only one preoccupation in her life - to get her daughters married off as soon as possible. Mrs. Bennet's ambitions are aroused when Mr. Bingley, their rich young neighbour, gets attracted to Jane's beauty. Elizabeth, although sympathetic to her sister's prospects and romantic hopes, does not let this preoccupation ruin her enjoyment of the foibles ofthe people around her. Especially when Darcy enters the picture, she has more reason to have fun!Even when heslights her, she does not let this spoil her humor.Elizabeth is a disinterested observer ofMiss Bingley's relentless efforts to trap Mr. Darcy. Or, so she thinks. It is only when she understands that her prejudice has been equal to his pride, she learns that he is the only man for her. By then, Darcy had run through a gamut of emotions and in rescuing Lydia, the last of the Bennet sisters, he proves to himself and Elizabeth, that she is the only woman for him.

Pride and Prejudice continues to fascinate even those who live in the world of Bridget Jones. For itis the same preoccupation that drives people today. Only the delicacy has disappeared. And that is probably the reason for its enduring popularity. Women want to be wooed, men to woo. That is the law of nature. And Austen understood it well.
