A science fiction thriller, this novel is about people whoobtainmarvelous and frightening paranormal powers. Trying to escapetheclutches of the police and a band of assassins, they embark onadangerous road trip.The young painter Dylan O`Connor and his autisticbrother Shep are ontheir way to New Mexico. In Arizona, they spend anight at a motelwhere a stranger attacks Dylan injecting him with agolden substance.He tells Dylan that he will either die or developsuperhuman powers andthat the enemies are already on their way to themotel.There is another victim: Jillian, a comedian. She meets DylanandShepherd outside the motel. Realizing they are in mortal danger,theyhit the road.At first, they want to have an antidote, but it soonbecomes clear thattheir heightened perceptions help them to flee.Cynical, melodramaticand constantly cracking jokes, Jilly is getting onDylan´s nerves. Onthe other hand, she finds him infuriatinglyreasonable and toooptimistic. She is in need of control-he believes infate.Normally, Shep is either talkative and quotes the whole contentofdictionaries; or he is taciturn taking refuge in his own world. Heishighly intelligent and needs routines that must not be disrupted.Nowhe repeatedly whispers the sentence: By the light of the moon.Compared to other novels by Dean Koontz, this one is rather upbeat.Itfeatures no horror, is sometimes mid-boggling, rather intriguingthanfrightening and reminiscent of X-Men. Therefore, it would alsobeadequate for younger readers. Koontz has created a particularlygoodportrayal of Shep, and we can see some of the problems autisticpeopleare confronted with every day. By the Light of the Moon hasenough originality to make for entertaining reading.
