The Chap
(TEMPLE, GUSTAV (EDITOR))

Publicidade
ABSTRACT ? THE CHAP Quarterly magazine for the discerning well dressed gentleman about town, offering tips on how to sport a well groomed handlebar moustache and how not to spill the brandy while driving the Bentley, the art of drinking Champaign from a lady?s stiletto, and how to wear a cravat properly, etc. The Chaps may be saddened to find that their journal of all aspects of suave sophistication and style are regarded as satirical by the great unwashed audience of students who purchase said journal to laugh at the antics of the upper class twits. The Chap gives articles on sartorial elegance by such luminaries as Stephen Fry, Lord March, Gilbert & George, Sir Donald Sinden, and strangely, punk poet, John Cooper Clark. The Chap offers tips on pipe smoking, and celebrates the life of a bounder like Terry Thomas. Sometimes the journal does carry serious observations. The Autumn 2006 edition has a feature criticising the cost of Armani suits which are cheaply produced, often in sweat shop conditions, when a Saville Row hand crafted made to measure suit would carry oodles more panache and prove to be much more durable. This kind of serious social comment sits side by side with very funny insights into the decline in style and fashion for vampires. The modern Nosferatu is likely to wear tee shirt and ripped jeans instead of the traditional cape. The magazine carries comic strips and spoof advertisements that are sometimes an improvement on the real ads (which are generally kept to a minimum). There are hilarious letters pages and a new section has been introduced inviting readers to send in pictures of themselves in their best clothes to have a panel of experts decide whether they are worthy to be considered as being chaps or not. Most sadly fail to qualify. Wealth, style and disorderly conduct maketh the chap. It is good for those of us who will never aspire to style to know that the tradition for insobriety and eccentricity has not completely faded from fashion as yet.
