I absolutely adored this book. I had to write an essay about this book regarding class and I managed to turn a chore into something rather enjoyable. In all these years I have resisted reading the text as I had convinced myself it would be some shallow novel, failing to capture my interest. Well, I was wrong! So many times I have heard conversations, read reviews and watched television programmes devoted to the book. I have purposely avoided anything relating to the text. In my mind, it was a silly romance novel with no depth. I like to read something a bit more exciting; a bit more gritty. I was forced to watch a remake of Pride and Prejudice during a lecture on my course. It was the one with Keira Knightley in it. (I couldn't stand watching her act at the time either...so I really felt that this experience was going to be torturous) I don't know why I had such preconceptions, I just did. Anyway, I started to watch the film and slowly found myself loosen up. I actually enjoyed it. I thought Keira Knightley played the part really well...I am now a fan of hers...but more importantly I am a fan of Jane Austen. That evening I couldn't stop thinking about the film, the characters, the multi layered issues, Mr Darcy! I finally figured out the wonder that is Pride and Prejudice - so called because of all the examples of pride and prejudice played out through the characters. I needed to get that book. The next day I bought the book and began to read. I didn't put it down for the next day or so - I was hooked. The writing style, the characters, everything just drew me in further. How can a single person create such a wonderful piece of art? How can one person create and capture the thoughts and feelings of so many conflicting characters. I fell in love with this book and am even considering writing about it in my dissertation. Read it?I defy you not to love it!
