The Club Dumas
(Arturo Perez-Reverte)
Much of The Club Dumas is very atmospheric and very intriguing. The main character, Lucas Corso, is interesting for who he is and what he is...a literary mercenary. The mystery he's drawn into is just that...a mystery that is not easily solved or even understood for most of the book. The literary references and foreign phrases used are somewhat challenging and could seem intimidating to some, but are rewarding to the reader who enjoys an enriching experience. Perhaps my disappointment with this book is that I expected it to be something different than what it turned out to be. That doesn't make it a bad book and I do feel that it's worth a read. However, it probably benefits from the hype associated with it in having been made into a Roman Polanski film and will leave some readers with the feeling that they were purposely drawn along for a long time because if they actually knew what was going on, they might not choose to finish the book or even read it in the first place.
