ABSTRACT ? VIZ ? The ultimate in bad taste monthly comics, produced initially on a shoestring budget by a group of students in Newcastle, but now a publishing phenomena, with countless spin offs, TV cartoons, and even feature films to its name. Viz features a string of unforgettable over the top characters like Roger Melly, The Man On The Telly, a TV presenter who can?t stop swearing and introducing pornography into just about any programme he presents. There is also Sid The Sexist, a Geordie misogynist who behaves appallingly to women and wonders why he never gets a girlfriend. There?s Johnny Fartpants, who can?t stop releasing wind, and Millie Tant, the radical political correctness obsessive who keeps missing the point of what goes on around her. There is a number of one off parodies of characters from established comics, such as the Barry The Cat strip that was modelled on a similar character in the Dandy. Barry likes to think he is a superhero in the Batman mould, but just gets his head kicked in. A real highlight is the Top Tips, feature which people offer useless, and even dangerous advice that mimics the real how to features in many magazines. MacDonalds borrowed the idea for a TV advertising campaign; provoking many accusations of plagiarism, but Viz were certainly the innovators for the idea. The letters page is also a hoot, with the letters clearly written by the editors themselves, which is the only explanation of how someone can write a letter having a go at a posting made in the very same issue. The magazine carries spoof advertisements, which you sometimes need to look at closely to distinguish from the real thing. The magazine, or perhaps it should be called a comic, is very funny, but some characters have clearly been used for too long. Billy The Fish, a football player who happened to be a fish, was very funny when it started, butt eventually he was put out to pasture, while other characters do tend to just do variations on the same old stuff week in week out. When it?s funny though, Viz is really funny.
