Forget you have a Daughter by Sandra Gregory:

Sandra was on a three-month vacation to Thailand and became stranded because she decided that she loved the island of koh Samui too much to leave, so she got a flat, boyfriend and a Job. During a canal journey to work, she licked off water that had accidentally splashed on her lip; unfortunately, she had unknowingly contacted amoebic dysentery. Therefore, she decided to go back to the island to recuperate. Unfortunately, that was the beginning of her troubles because she had also contracted dengue fever and could not work, therefore was broke. (No mention of the boyfriend at this stage). During her stay on the island, she became friends with a fellow beach bum called Robert, who was to be her nemesis. She was so ill, dejected, alone, and miserable so decided to get back to Bangkok to call her family for the Xmas. She left the island, made the call, but made a mistake and lied to her parents that every thing was all right with her. Unfortunately she was broke. Therefore, when she accidentally bumped into Robert she agreed to carry a package to Tokyo in order to get money to return to Britain. Interestingly, she had a faint superstition that the pack contained drugs; she convinced herself that as he was not selling the drugs to kids, taking the package to Tokyo was okay. On the train journey to the airport to get her flight to Tokyo and despite her misgivings, she stayed on the train. The aspects of the story that I found annoying, was the causal assumption on her part to think that she will escape from the situation. I am making this statement because during her body search at the airport, she was x-rayed, but released and offered the use of a toilet by one of the female guards, presumably to dispel the drugs, but she refused to go. This I considered extremely stupid and condescending, because, if she had, she might have been allowed to leave if she had shown signs of being contrite, but her decision not to use the toilet to dispose of the drugs, was an indication I suppose by the Thai authorities of her resolve to carry out the crime. Hence, she was tried, jailed, and sentenced to death. This book was written as an apology to her parents for the humiliation, despair and shame that she had subjected them to. She was able to write the book because the then Thai governor pardoned her. Do I empathise with the writer, no!! Why? Read the book.
