Shadows Over Innsmouth
(JONES, STEPHEN (EDITOR))
ABSTRACT ? JONES, STEPHEN (EDITOR) SHADOWS OVER INNSMOUTH (1994) Victor Gollantz. This is an unusual and high quality collection of horror stories, being a sunning set of sequels to Lovecraft?s classic horror yarn, The Shadow Over Innsmouth Many leading authors, Guy N. Smith, Neil Gaiman, and Ramsay Campbell among them contributes. The stories vary from ones about travellers going back to Innsmouth in search of fame, fortune or family and facing similar fish-man-toad monsters to those encountered in the original story, and what happens to people who have bought goods, artefacts and merchandise that has some connection with the evil town. Dave LANGFORD?S Deepnet is possibly the best tale, in which computer Internet software produced in Innsmouth starts to give people the bug-eyed dopey look of mindless aquarium fish. The story is a parody of how computers sap our intelligence anyway. Beyond The Reef by Basil Cooper is loser in style and format to Lovecraft?s saga. Tunnels are discovered that show the creatures survived the Navy attack on the Reef that concluded Lovecraft?s story. The police in Arkham find the escape tunnels and plan a similar assault, but after a great build up, the story ends abruptly just before the charges are setoff. There are great scenes along the way, such as when one researcher on the investigative team wakes from a dream about being in serpent-infested swamp, wakes to find him in muddy pyjamas. Jack Yervil?s The Big Fish is a Raymond Chandleresque spoof in which the Marlowe like detective throws some great cynical one-liners at the horrors he sees. Guy N. Smith, well known for his Giant crab stories, tells of a man who visits Innsmouth but leaves in terror and then notices that he no longer has a shadow. Neil Gaiman?s Only The End Of The World Again sees a crossover with more conventional horror fare when the creatures of Innsmouth involve a werewolf in their nebulous plans, hoping to sacrifice it for the purpose of destroying the world. He has his own ideas.
