Genesis
(The Bible)

Publicidade
The book of Genesis tells the story or the creation of the universe, the earth, and life on earth. It then goes on to tell of the creation of man, man's fall and how God began the process to redeem man from his sin. When we first start to read, we realize that even though the book is named Genesis, the author has no intention of describing in detail how the universe and all in it was formed. It simply says God did it, and that's it. 66 books, over 1,000 pages of text, and all we get is one chapter. The real genesis is the beginning of mankind and God's interaction with him. God creates man in His own image, and is placed in the garden of Eden. Adam (the man's name) is given charge over the whole garden and all the animals and plant life in it, it is his job to maintain paradise. The only rule in Eden is, not to eat of one tree, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, if he does, the punishment will be death. After some time, Adam gets a little lonely and God creates a woman, Eve from Adams rib as a help meet, or an assistant in his work.Adam and Eve are perfectly innocent before God, like children. But that won't be for long, for sometime before the creation of man, there was a war in heaven (the book of Genesis does not record this war, but it can be inferred later on in the Bible) between God and Lucifer, a powerful and beautiful angel who wanted to be better than God Himself. Lucifer assembles an army of angles who opt to follow him in his revolt. Fighting the creator of the universe must not be easy, he was cast down to earth, and other apochryphal (non-biblical) texts record that their beauty was stripped from them when they were cast out, and Lucifer even loses his name, now he is Satan, which literally means adversary. Needless to say, he has a chip on his shoulder. So, while Adam and Eve are living it up in the garden, Satan comes to Eve as a serpentand tempts her to break the only rule in paradise. Sadly, she does and she persuades Adam to do the same. The serpent promised Eve she would be like God, and the reason He told them not to eat of the tree is because they would be equals to Him. This isn't the case. because of the fruit, they experience guilt, shame, and alienation from God for the first time in their eternal lives. It isn't long before God finds out, and He does just as He told Adam He would do; He punished Adam, Eve, and the serpent and cast them out of the garden, never to return again. Adam and Eve also lose their eternal life, and now have to live a life of hard work, labor pains, and eventual death. Lucifers rebellion was the first sin, and he successfully passed that sin down to mankind, and man has to experience the same death and defeat that he does. And as soon as you think things can't get any worse, the first murder takes place shortly therafter. Adam and Eve had two sons, Cain and Abel. They both go to present offerings to God, and God doesn't except the offering Cain brings. God tells him to not feel bad and to just do better next time, but instead Cain kills his brother in a jealous rage. Everything goes downhill from there. The book of Genesis goes on to record geneologies of all the descendents of Adam, and stops midway to tell the story of Noah, a man favored by God and was spared along with his family when God decided to destroy the earth in a global flood. Noah and his family are the only survivors, and God chooses to start over the human race with him, but sin abounds again. Later on, God finds another man, Abraham, who is a righteous person amidst a world of sinful men. Through Abraham God chooses to bless the whole world, for after the flood He vowed never to destroy His creation again due to man's sin, so through Abraham he would later found the nation of Israel, the chosen people through which the whole world could come back to him. The rest of the book tells the story of Abraham's dealings with God and the lives of his progeny, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. Their lives proveresting, and all that happens way back in this ancient time set the stage for the future events of the Bible, including the life of Jesus Christ. The book ends with the first family of Israel settling in Egypt, where they will grow and thrive into a great nation, and this also sets the stage for the exodous, the second book of the Bible. Genesis is great in setting the stage for so many future events, anyone who reads the Bible will see just how some later events that seem to have no meaning or are mysterious got started, and provides excellent moral lessons along the way. There is tons to be learned in just this one book, reading it once does one no justice.
