Poetry Directory
(The Poetry Society)
Having enjoyed membership of The Poetry Society I took another look at the website available to the general public and found, to my surprise, that its alright to phone up the Membership Manager and order a free copy of Poetry Directory ...
I duly did so and got the following Poetry Directory ... it contains a lot of information and I am summarizing some of the relevant stuff for the readership as follows:
It starts off with an introduction to the Poetry Society .... which is there to help poets ...you and I ...and poetry succeeds in Britain ... it was established in 1909 and is now Britain's most dynamic arts organization and membership is open to all ... thank goodness IT displays no age discrimination or IT certainly would be in a lot of hot water!
The Poetry Society provides space at the Poetry Cafe in Covent Garden and there you are welcome to read your own poems ... I did so .. and it went down a treat! Mind you, with hindsight its a pity the Media wasnt there ... as all my footage was wasted and apart from telling all and sundry ... nobody I know knows anything about performance poetry ... they believed it was all up to.. Andrew Motion and Seamus Heaney! Well there you have it ... everyone is welcome to participate ... but you dont get paid for it ... so if you are short of a EURO or two ... think again, discuss it with your Bank Manager ... or phone a friend ... before you risk it and read your dearest poems!
Bookshops are listed ... well done! Copyright a few points on the "dos" and "donts" .. and the general rule is that work is owned by the author! But, copyright in the European Union lasts for the lifetime of the author and for a further 70 years from the end of the year of death of the author: if you wish to use poem or poems and the poem falls into either category then you need to ask for permission to use it ... I guess. .. from The European Union Countries and their participants and residents!
Critical assessment ... show your work ... if its good enough for you then open the door to others .....workshops are useful face to face meetings are adviced and critical assessment is available from tutors through the post... Reminds me of some work I produced which I greatly valued and so the person who commissioned it wasfrom an non EU country .. a friend suggested a second opinion on this work as the UK snarled back at me an awful rejection ... I duly sent my poems off to America and was truly surprised when I received a Rave review for free from the USA ... so over and out rejections ...
Libraries ... Royal Festival Hall in London .. go to it ... its highly recommended! And last but not least Poetry Anthologies are very popular and there is a great listing of items in this connection ...including references to the BBC and The Forward Book of Poetry ... hope you have time on your hands ... because next comes Publication with lots of suggestions in that creative field... happy reading .... keep on reading ...
