Lagey Raho Munnabhai
(RAJKUMAR HIRANI)

Publicidade
With his debut film, director Rajkumar Hirani gave us an iconoclastic gangster in ?Munnabhai M.B.BS?, a genuine, heart warming crowd pleaser that achieved it?s end without having to disgorge heapings of sentimental claptrap. Now, propelling the quip of the well-established ?Munnabhai and Circuit? cult, the director discharges an even spunkier and funnier interpretation of Gandhianism in present day Mumbai. The film successfully establishes a ?feel-good? representation of the sentimental cynicism that?s setting in the new urban India or as you might, the post-Gandhi era.
The film is the next episode in the ?Munnabhai? series and so not a ?sequel? in the true sense. In fact the only characters from the progenitor that carry forward into the upshot are Munna alias Murli Prasad Sharma (Sanjay Dutt) and his mobster sidekick Circuit (Arshad Warsi). The two are still residents of the dhobi ghat area in Mumbai. The episode launches itself by establishing Jahnvi (Vidya Balan) as the RJ whose voice and plunk Munna is completely smitten by. As he tunes into her daily radio show, Munna sights a potential opportunity to be on the show himself by winning a contest on awareness of Gandhian values.

Rounding up a group of college professors, Circuit arranges for his chief to meet his crush by winning the radio contest. Posing as a professor, Munna introduces himself as a street-smart, sassy follower of the Mahatma. To brush up his knowledge of Gandhian values, he spends three sleepless days in the ?Gandhi Sangrahalay? (Gandhi Library). At the end of his diligent stint in the library, Munna picks up a psychological condition wherein he conjures an omnipresent spectre-like vision of the Mahatma (played by Dileep Prabhavalkar).

Alright, once the Gandhi angle is set, turns out that Jahnvi herself runs a mini old age home from her bungalow campus trying her best to gratify and entertain the aborted and forlorn people. Munna chips in with his contribution to aid Jahnvi in her effort, and together with Circuit, the director gives us the new endearing trio of Munna, Circuit and Jahnvi. The conflict of interest arises as Lucky Singh (Boman Irani), a construction tycoon wants to grab the prime real estate on which the Jahnvi?s home cum old age abode sits.

Here begins Munna?s modern day ?Satyagraha? wherein the director throws in his comparison of the real world with a possible Gandhian world scenario, which is as sapid in its message as it is endearing in its wit. Without giving out too much of the plot, the director crafts some interesting characters, like the cocky astrologer Bhatuk Maharaj (played by Saurabh Sinha), the wily lawyer (Ninad Kamath) and a distressed youth D?silva (Jimmy Sheirgill). Like its progenitor, ?Lagey Raho? too liberally draws people from ordinary, mundane lives and weaves them into the narrative with a relevant plot dimension.

Though ?MBBS? was arguably inspired by the Robin Williams-starrer ?Patch Adams?, ?Lagey Raho? is an absolutely original movie; one which is unassumingly funny at all the right moments without being overbearingly sentimental with its Gandhian public interest decree. The music of the film is a winner all the way, from ?Bole Toh? to ?Chaarana?. The pick of the lot though has to be the soul-stirring ?Bande Mein Tha Dum? track which the film uses as the background whenever it throws in one of those captivating Gandhian moments. The cast is fine fettle and the support players contribute well to the general impact of the film. Sanjay Dutt charms again as the title character, but it?s Warsi as Circuit, who steals the show this time providing for the most enduring images of the film.

If there?s one compunction that the film constantly sneers up rather agonizingly, it?s the casting of Prabhavalkar as Gandhi. He doesn?t look the part, his make up is a mess and his dialogue delivery feels much affected. That aside, the film is a successfully attempted tribute to the abiding spirit of the Mahatma without striking a sermon on leisure moviegoers. Bole toh... ?Cool hai ?. Bravo team Munnabhai!
