Madame Curie
(Eve Curie; Translated by Vincent Sheean)

Publicidade
?Madame Curie?, this translated edition in English, is quite an interesting read. The Lady needs no introduction. However, her biography written by her daughter Eve Curie gives us a privileged glimpse into the life of a recluse, whose achievements never fail to awe us.Born on 7th November 1876 - during the oppressive Russian regime in Poland- Manya and her siblings had a hard time making ends meet. Both their parents were teachers. Very early on, the lady started showing evidence of the genius she was destined to become- a baby of four she could read fluently. However her circumstances coupled with her self-effacing qualities made her wait a few years before she could plunge herself in her single minded pursuit of science. Once she enrolled in the University of Sorbonne, there was no looking back.Love came to her in the form of Prof. Pierre Curie. An association of two synchronized brilliant minds which bore fruit in the form of Radium.Madame Curie was an exceptional individual. She won the Noble Prize twice- once for Physics in 1903, jointly with Pierre & Henry Becquerel & again in 1911 for Chemistry. This is an awesome achievement. This book by her daughter is noteworthy because it pierces through the veil of the scientist to let us meet the woman. Inspite of being what she was, the lady never shirked from her duties as a wife & mother. She learns to cook in the early years of her marriage. Later when her daughters ? Irene& Eve ? were born, she kept a record of their day-to-day progress. Still later, concerned about their education she finds innovative means to teach them. It is a must read for all those who are curious about Marie Curie, the person. It recounts the anecdotes of those who knew her most intimately & were closest to her. However, the only thing which one misses in the book are photographs; some leaves from the scientist?s family album would have made it even more poignant.
