The Shadow Of The Wind
(Carlos Ruiz Zafon)
I happened upon this book by chance at a bookstore whilst looking for something less mainstream to read on holiday. The reviews on the back cover were exemplary and as the book itself was about my real passion in life, old books, I thought I would give it a try.The story has everything a good book requires, a cemetery of forgotten books, a family torn by their personal circumstances and the turmoil of the era in which they live. Heroes, of a kind, villains, of a kind and characters of the richest and deepest you will see in most stories.Shadow of the Wind will keep you captivated from the moment that Daniels father shows him the hidden library, to the moment you close the final page. Intrigue, desire, lust, mystery, friendship, action and history all set in the beauty of the city of Barcelona. What else could any reader want from an authors? first book. I for one can only await Carlos Ruiz Zafons next offering with baited breath and I am confident that after devouring this novel so will you.The beauty of this book is that it is utterly believable and unlike so many books today the reader is not required to suspend their belief in the world that we know in order to enjoy this story.
