Autistic spectrum disorders consist of a group of developmental disorderswhich are charactterised by [1]abnormal social interaction[2] qualitatively impaired communication skills and [3] restricted reportoire of activities and interests.It has an onset prior to 3 yrs
The prevalence is 2-6%.according to WHO is1/500.CDC quotes a prevalence of 1/166
The cause of autism is unknown.The hypothesis is that it ispartly genetic and contributed by enviornmental factors
clinical features include[1] social:may resist cuddling,gaze avoidence,unaware of others feelings,dont know how to make friends or play[ 2] communicaton: failure /delay to acqire language may repeat or recite phrases,no creative/imaginative play.other features like big head, low intelligence,seizure is also noted
medical treatment include SELETIVE SEROTONIN REUPTAKE INHIBITORS,STIMULANTS LIKE METHYL PHENIDATE FOR HYPERACTIVITY
occupational therapy improves quality of life
early identification: special interventions need to be started before deviation and delay from normal pattern of development has progressed too far.Canadian researchers have become the first to pinpoint specific behavioral signs in infants as young 12 months that can predict ,with remarkable accuracy ,whether a child will develop autism[McMaster daily news] It is debatable whetherautism can be diagnosed in early months of life,although research indicates characteristics that may lead to suspect autism.The three most striking features in infancy are failure to orient to one's name,failure

message for parents: Parents have a belief that autism is caused by poor parenting .Parents do not can not cause autism
It is also known that parental behavior before ,during or after pregnancy does not cause autism
