Harry Potter Andthe Chamber Of Secrets
(J. K. ROWLING)
ABSTRACT ? J. K. ROWLING ? HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS 1998 Bloomsbury Press. The second book in the HP series not only reintroduces Hogworts, Dumbledore, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Nearly Headless Nick, (A ghost of a man who was not quite fully decapitated) etc, but also a whole host of new characters. Harry meets Dobby, the enslaved house-elf who desperately tries to stop Harry even getting to Hogworts (which Harry is keen to do if only to escape from the dreadful Dursleys who remain his repulsive foster parents. We also meet Moaning Myrtle, a ghostly girl who haunts a deserted toilet block at Hogworts. The story begins with Harry denied access to the mysterious platform gateway that leads to the Hogworts Express. Harry and Ron take a flying car to the boarding school instead, only to crash in the grounds where the Whomping Willow, a malevolent magical tree in the grounds, attacks them. Harry is chastised, but not expelled for his emergency use of magic in the Muggle (non-wearing) world. School lessons in this second year are mixed with new thrills and dangers. Harry gets clues from a mysterious Tom Riddler, a shadowy connotation to the main villain, Lord Voldermort. Harry also meets the new Dark-Arts Master, a vain, pompous, boastful wizard called Gilderoy Lockhart, who proves to be a total coward rather than the hero he claims to be in all of his books. Harry follows a string of clues left by Tom Riddle, which involves a plan to reawaken Voldermort, The story is not as well rounded as the first book, (see my review at http://www.shvoong.com/books/408669-harry-potter-philospher-s-stone/) as the mystery and denounment don?t have the genuine air of surprise that the first book offered, but there is st illa great deal of invention and imagination at work here. The ultimate freedom of Dobby, achieved by presenting him with a sock, is very moving, and we get our first insight into how evil the Malfoys really are (They are the family who own Dobby, and the main bullies that Potter encounters) really are.
