Pet Sematary
(Stephen King)
Nothing really frightening during the first pages, but like always, one is surprised by the misleading appearance of the first part of the book. While seeing himself offered the promotion he always dreamed of, Louis Creed moves with all his family, his Rachel wife and their Eilen children (followed to the step by its cat Wiston Churchill, aka Church) and Gage, in a beautiful house located in Ludlow, Maine. Doctor, he will exert at the universitary hospital of the area. The neighbors Jud and Norma Crandall seem sympathetic. Paradise on earth for this very ordinary family...But you should not be deluded, we are talking about a novel of Stephen King, and the happy stories are not those which he is the most famousfor ! The blink to the surge of horror is given as of the first pages, we immediately think of a source of misfortune while reading that the house of Creed and of Crandall are separated by an expressway, crossed by trucks at full speed the whole day long. Comes to be added a distressing blink when Jud learns and shows a path at the end the small family garden carrying out to a pet cemetery where the city's children bury their beloved animal. And the bloody introduction occurs the first day of Louis at the hospital, when one brings Victor Pascow to him, 20 years, who literally exploded his head. When the joung man, knowing the name of the doctor who in vain tries to save him, gives him advice against the cemetery and what it contains. And environment is set when Louis feels a shiver of panic traverse him whereas he lays his baby down in his cradle. As if one spied him in the dark, as if an unhealthy presence sought to frighten him. The horror towards which Stephen King involves us in what I consider being one of his darkest and more... symbolic novel system will break of a blow, and will transform what seemed to be a nice novel in an black and destabilizing story. When Louis stays home on his own on Thanksgiving, refusing to go spend this feastday in his family in law , whith who he is scrambled for years, we penetrate by the side door in terror. Why this stupid Church had abruptly taken desire for crossing the street? Why did he have the bad idea to be crushed by a truck? And why did Jud, annoyed to see its young neighbor confronted with the need for acknowledging his daughter of the death of her cherished cat and for plunging her in the deepest sorrow, had to talk about the Sematary? This old Indian cemetery, hidden far, well after the pet cemetery, all at the very end of the road. And there why does he advise him to go there and to bury the poor Church? The fact is that Louis follows the advice of his friend. That when its small family finally comes back home, he cannot be solved to destroy their small quiet life in announcing them Church's death, and fakes, like them all he is seeking the animal. And when the cat, returned among deaths makes an unexpected reappearance Louis sees his entire universe mixed up. He the scientist, the skeptic must recognize that the magic of the Indian ground worked. Yes, Church rebirths of his ashes, and fills the house with his very new gravy smell, and the many shampoos will change nothing there. And more than all, it surprises and frightens Louis by his very new personality. Cruel towards its preys, underhand and petty the small ball of hairs takes another dimension with the eyes of its Masters. And hell opens in front of our amazed eyes! Take God's place, give life back to the death... And everything that it can generate. With ablink of the eye to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Pet Sematary is an ode with the suffering. A consent of our impotence face to death, especially that of our close relations. In this book Stephen King tries to make us understand that sometimes it is necessary to be able to face fate, to accept the reality which is ours with its batch of misfortunes and worry. That the choices that the life puts in front of us throughout our course are seldom easy to make. And tit is better sometimes to do nothing than to feel obliged to progress in mistake. Simetierre is a terror book in the most strict sense of the term. It carries us out to the edge of madness, to the limits of what our spirit can endure. And it is not only in its glaucous descriptions that Stephen King gives us the creeps. It is when he makes us penetrate in the tortuous meanders of the spirit of Louis who sinks little by little in madness. You will tell me that it is a subject that the author already approached in Shining for example... I will answer you that it is nothing! There are several kinds of madnesses, and the one he offers us in this breathtaking novel is one that can all surprise us, because we all get to lose someone close...Church's death is only the first level of the climb towards madness that will submerge Louis. It will not leave you indifferent, if however you still dare to turn the pages.
