Beloved
(Toni Morrison)
One of the best books I have ever read. It definately gave me a perspective of what America was like during the years of slavery. What I love in particular is how the writer shifts focus from the present to the past as the charcters relive the experience of slavery. The first chapter is very moving, when beloved is desribed as a child who is now a ghost and has come to haunt her mother.
I recmmend this book as its a good read, especially if you have an interest in slavery and the way people lived in those days. Just one warning though. Some of the details can be graphic and I suggest if you are not able to read details of rape and murder, then perhaps this book is not for you.
The main charcter of the story is a strong female who has lived through rape, murdering her own daugther and a very difficult child birth as she runs away from her slave masters. I was moved by the reason why she ends up killing her daughter. I think the effects of slavery took its toll on her and she did not want her baby girl to belong to a slave master to do as they pleased. That is why after the murder, when the baby is buried, Seth has the word Beloved engraved onto the grave stone.
The end is amazingwhen the ghost of beloved leaves and the description is something the shows us readers the Seth will finally let go and now move on. Somehow getting through each day with her new partner away from the painful memories of her past.
think anyone reading this book will be touch in some way. Toni Morrison definately deserved all the awards she recieved for writing this book.
