The Burglar Who Painted Like Mondrian By Lawrence Block Harper Torch Mystery 1983 Republished 2005 U.S. $7.50 CAN. $9.99 Pages 311 The Burglar Who Painted Like Mondrian is one of ten Bernie Rhodenbarr mystery novels written by Lawrence Block, and the very first mystery novel I've ever read, being the great big fan of Paranormal/Romance/Action/Adventure/whatever novels that I am. To say that I'm delighted to have picked up the paperback in my local Wal-Mart for a change in reading material would be somewhat of an understatement. I don't know about the other mystery novels of the world, but The Burglar Who Painted Like Mondrian has made me a Block fan for life. Bernie Rhodenbarr is a used bookstore owner who likes to break into people's houses and steal valuable things on the side for some extra cash. One night, the apartment building that's virtually imposible to get into is the same building where he goes to appraise a private library, giving him access to the entire building and the apartment he wants to heist. Unfortunately for him, the man who owned the library has been murdered, and since Bernie has no alibi that he can use since he was in the middle of stealing from another apartment that very night, he becomes the prime suspect. To complicate things even more, Carolyn Kaiser, Bernie's lesbian friend and occasional henchperson, is found drinking in Bernie's apartment claiming her cat has been catnapped by a woman who calls her with a fake Nazi accent demanding one quarter of a million dollars or the cat will never be seen ever again. A fact which perplexes the both of them since the cat is completely worthless aside from the sentimental value. Not to mention Ray, the greedy cop who has it in for Bernie coming into his store asking to use the washroom while a dead man is sitting on the toilet. I wouldn't describe The Burglar Who Painted Like Mondrian as a serious Mystery that makes you think over the small things of life and teaches you about the process of being a burglar, but it's definitely a fun read with quick dialogue and hilarious situations. More then worth the two days it took me to read it
